Hello everyone! I’m selling my 2009 Mini Cooper S. I bought this about 2 years ago. The water pump had gone out on it, and I was looking for a fun vehicle with great gas mileage. I took it home and worked on it for the next few months, replacing everything that I could find wrong with it. I’ve included a list of the majority of the parts that I replaced below. After that it ran great! I drove it for over a year for work and personal use. I can't tell you how fun this car is to drive, and the AC and heat both work great. It's very comfortable. It was my daily driver, but it still had a few lights on the dash that I didn’t like.
There was a seatbelt light for the passenger seat. This is a common problem with these minis. The seat pressure sensor gets faulty, then reads a passenger in the seat even when no passenger is present. I ended up buying a bypass off eBay, so the light would go off. What that means is that the pressure sensor is still reading someone in the seat, but the passenger seatbelt sensor is now always reading buckled, so the light is off.
The tire pressure light was on, and I noticed that the tires were getting old, so I replaced the tires, and didn’t have that light on any more.
Finally, there were no more lights for about a week, and then the check engine light came on. It is indicating a random misfire. This again is caused by a known issue with these minis. The PCV valve sucks up a bit of oil from the valve cover and spits the oil into the engine, causing it to burn a little oil and have a code for a misfire. I can hear it when it’s idling, but can’t notice it at all when it’s driving. The only fix is to get an after-market PVC valve with an oil separator in it. I was going to do this, but ran out of time, so this light is still on. As far as I know, that’s the only reason the check engine light is on.
While I was working on the engine, I bought new fog light assemblies, because I noticed the others were broken, but I forgot to install them. The driver’s side low beam is also out.
Here’s what I’ve worked on so far: I did the head job and cleaned the entire engine. I replaced all of the tires, brakes, rotors, and the front shocks. (The rear shocks are in the trunk, waiting to be installed.) I replaced the fuel pump and the suction line. Lastly, I got the passenger seat belt light to go off.
Here’s what needs to be done still: The sunroof is not opening and is currently leaking when it rains. In an attempt to find the leak in the roof, I suspected the antenna. It crumbled in my hands when I wiggled it, so I covered it with tape. It still needs to be replaced. The car bounces a lot, like driving a pissed off bull, because the rear shocks haven’t been replaced yet, but those come with the car. The after-market PCV valve with the oil separating canister needs to be installed. As far as I know, that’s it. Those are all of the problems with the car.
This car is in excellent shape. It’s beautiful, fast, very fun, and gets 34 mpg! So, the question is, why am I selling it. The answer is simple. I’m getting married and decided to build a house for me and my wife, so I bought a truck. I wish I could afford to keep it, because I really do love this car. I know it will be a good car for someone else though.
I haven’t driven it since August, so I let the sticker expire. To get it inspected, the lights will need to be replaced and I would replace that PCV valve with the after-market one. After that, it should pass with flying colors and you won’t have any more lights on inside.
When it got cold, the tire pressure light came back on, but that’s nothing to worry about. It simply needs to be reset.
