A couple of English details (2024)

With the English release of Pokémon Ranger, Serebii.net is reporting this:

• Manaphy is known as Manaphy in English.
• And it should be easy to get it for D/P since the event missions can be unlocked without going to an event.
• The other revelation is that the region of D/P will now be known as Sinnoh.

Sinnoh will take a bit of getting used to...

Sinnoh? They put the 'h' in the wrong place >_>. So what, it's pronounced Sin-o in English? First time they've changed the Region name so vastly. Hoenn/Houen is pronounced exactly the same and Johto/Kanto are the same obviously.

I think they should have left it as Shino. :/ Or at least Shinoh.

Ah, so us English-people would pronounce it the same way?

You know...I just realized Korobooshi and Masukippa will get renamed as well. -_-

Because it would make the little Narutards confused with the character of the same name. XD

I actually like it more than how I've been pronouncing Shinou- "Shin-ho". ^^

Sinnoh's pronunciation's is...well...Dangit, couldn't it have been Sinoh? It wouldn't trip my tongue otherwise, and looks less....It wouldn't have six letters! >_< I'm so used to five and Orre's four!

"Sai-noh" would've been better in phonics. "Sin-noh"s just odd. o_o

Sinno? I like Shinou better, though that's probably since I'm preconditioned to accept that.

It's good you'll be able to get Manaphy without the events, Nintendo left them until the last minute in the 3rd generation.

"Sinnoh" IS the Japanese name, it's just that we've never seen it officially romanized before. "Shin'ou" is how "Sinnoh" is spelled in kana. It hasn't been changed- it's just that our translation was off this whole time.

And Habunake, if you haven't heard, the trademarked romaji name of Masukippa is "Muskippa."

So, how is the Manaphy event unlocked in English Ranger? It'll probably be a while before I'm there, but I'd like to know.

The problem lies in the fact that most English-speaking people do not know the rules of romanizing Japanese, and it would never occur to them to pronounc "si" as "shi" because there isn't any precedent (at least no immediately obvious one) in the English language for such a pronunciation. In fact, I wasn't really thinking that "si" is how "shi" was romanized until I remembered seeing it a few times in romanized names of Japanese websites (like "tenshinranran" in kana written as "Tensinranran").

Besides...isn't that just one system of romanization, and a rather outdated one at that? The systems that my Japanese textbook, Japanese dictionaries, and Japanese grammar dictionaries (all written by different people and published by different companies) use are all ones in which the kana for "shi" is romanized as "shi", not "si". And that's how I've seen it all over the place except on some self-romanized Japanese sites like the example I cited above.

So "Sinnoh"...I hope NoA doesn't actually expect everyone to pronounce it as "shin-oh". I'd be surprised if the official anime dub even does (then again, there have been discrepancies aplenty between the anime and NoA translations). In my head every time I see "Sinnoh" I don't read it with the "sh" sound, for sure. And then it just sounds terribly awkward.

Not outdated, but simply rare. In linguistic circles you are likely to see such spellings as tookyoo zya naku hirosima desu instead of Tōkyō ja naku Hiroshima desu.
