We havent actually seen how the episodes themselves play out. Who's to say they're going to win any of these?

I'm pretty sure winning in this context is just: Prove you can use tera well. Not even nessecarily beat the Gym Leader with it.

While I agree with your worries about the pacing, the Lucius storyline as it was wasn't really giving Liko or Roy any opportunities to properly develop their competence besides battling each other or dealing with wild Pokemon they could barely handle on their own. An arc like this is desperately needed imo if the narrative wants us to seriously believe that these kids are meant to pose a legitimate challenge to Rayquaza.

So, I do think this appears to be moving too fast, but also it's a temporary arc and they have a lot of ground to cover (seemingly wanting to showcase all 8 gym leaders), so I'm willing to forgive some off-screen speed traveling for the sake of the main objective.

The idea behind the arc. is great but I hope the gym leaders don't just turn this into a checklist, I guess the pacing should be similar to Satoshi vs. Mary if indeed they're 1 on 1's, half on setup and character introduction with the other half on the battle and gimmick. I do hope the kids at least have to KO the gym leaders and not just showoff Terastal. They should be subduing these real trainers in official trainer gym battles since they're not wild battles or about running away from the Explorers.

I know they've had quite a few "patchwork" animation episodes so I hope this isn't similar to production issues with PM2019/Journeys.

If they're going to rush it anyway might as well have stayed with the Lucuis storyline. One episode between each town is entirely too fast.

But this isn’t “one episode”. We’ve been to most of these locations at least once before.

And as proven in our first trip to Paldea, they’re not adverse to going back to a town they already visited before, so there’s nothing suggesting they won’t come back for whatever reason.

I'm not referring to spending one episode sightseeing (even though that's a big portion of a "world tour" Pokemon series, worldbuilding) I'm referring to just going through the gym leaders one episode a piece on their turf on a mandated checklist to debut them and show them off doing gym battles. The opening made it seem like these affairs would have a tad space between them.

Do we have actual episode count for this arc. or is this more of guestimating?

Guesstimating, Arc 1 was 25, arc 2 was 20. So it's safe to go with the lower number, as I doubt they'll like, lower it down to 15 or anything. Plus it lines up nicely with each arc being about how long a 2 cour seasonal anime would be.

Are Roy & Dot going to have their gym battles in these episodes too, or are they just setting up for the matches later?

Ya either Roy is going to get messed up or the battle is going to be interrupted. No way Roy can beat Nemona lol.

Here's how i see it. Roy and co go to artazon for the test, nemona is there challenges roy, hassle interrupts / roy loses then they go the art festival whatever, and then roy challenges brassius and uses strat he learned from battling against nemona and wins... thats how i see the episode go

This is also what I expect, based on the Katy/Liko episode.

The first half will be the setup, and second half will be the battle.

Its interesting that Roy has yet to win a I v I battle. If he battles both Nemona and Brassius in this episode, it seems unlikely that he'd lose twice in a row, even if he learns Terastilization.

I think its good that part of the assessment is learning the basics of using terastalization, but for the sake of mature growth it would also be beneficial to the story if the protagonist won their battles as a merit of progressive skill to surpass their mentors.

That's not entirely true.
He managed to defeat Zir.

As for losing twice in a row, why would that be unlikely?
It's in his nature to lose.

What even... its not in his nature ti lose lol. He's just been stacked against really difficuot opponents. He did manage to take out teppens pokemon, defeated zir, and did quite well against rayquaza in the finale for arc 2. Hoping he gets a solid win here.

If Roy does end up losing...hopefully somebody points out, like Kabu did for Liko, he can't just go attack attack! every battle without strategizing a bit...or he starts to get frustrated losing almost every two or three fights he's in...worst case scenario he begins to get jealous of either Dot or Liko during the training arc, or something...that is if they go a similar way to Dawn in the anime, losing a few contests, getting sad.
